Breaking A Bad Habit

Have you ever wanted to get rid of a bad habit?  If so join the club. I have some ideas that have worked for me.  Maybe they will work for you as well. I will put them into three steps to keep it simple and easy to understand.

First recognize you have a habit that is affecting you negatively.  Realize that it is limiting you.  Understand that it gets stronger every day.  Focus on the negatives that it brings into your life.  It is only with honesty that you can begin to make progress.

As long as you like what you are doing, or refuse to see it as a limiter in your life it’s a dead-end street.  However the moment you begin to dislike the habit, the moment you begin to speak truthfully about it, is the moment that you will make a decision.  Making a decision to quit it is the second step.

Decision is the ultimate power. If you will make a decision to quit it you will begin to gain the strength to break it completely.  The best time to make the decision is the moment you feel strongest about quitting. Once you make the decision you must then focus on the benefits that breaking this habit will bring into your life.  You must encourage yourself that it is worth it, that the end result will be beneficial.

The third step is you have to declare it.  You have to put it out in the open.  You have to speak out about your decision.  If you don’t tell someone what you plan to do most of time you will not follow through.

You need the accountability that comes from someone asking you how are you doing.  Are you still laying the habit down?  This accountability will give you strength when no one is around and you feel the weakness that always comes when your changing direction.  Knowing that someone will be asking you will give you the added motivation to overcome during times of temptation.

Small failures should not be considered total failure.  If you give in momentarily just begin again immediately.  Don’t use your single failure as a reason to quit the process or throw in the towel.

It takes 21 days to break a habit so you don’t have to struggle very long. Congratulate yourself on each day made.  With each day you will gain strength and resolve although their will be those moments you have to overcome.

One last thing you must do.  You can never get rid of one habit without replacing it with another habit.  So you must have in mind what habit you need to replace this bad one with.  Let me give you some examples to paint a word picture in your mind.

You need to lose weight.  That the bad habit.  The new habit must be eating the right foods, or the foods that will counteract the bad habit you formed in your eating behavior.

You need to get out of debt from overspending.  You must begin the process of placing discipline in your spending.  So you make saving money your new habit.

You need to quit getting angry.  You must bring your thoughts under subjection.  You will need to speak slower, lower your voice and think about what you are going to say.  This will give you control over your explosive nature.

You want to get in shape.  Start a daily exercise program. Set a time and keep it at least 5 days a week.

Always replace a bad habit with a good one if you want success.  If you don’t replace it with another habit you have no chance of success.  Whatever you choose to replace it with must be doable by you.  It must be something you can give yourself to.

Break a habit today you will glad you did tomorrow.

Is Jesus First In Your Life?

Is Jesus first in your life or last?  Is He the most important person or just another friend?  Is Jesus the apple of your eye?  When you think of all the people in your life is He at the top of the list?  Can you honestly say that out of all the things in your life, Jesus Christ is the one thing you can’t live without?

In a world where burning books, and building Mosques, and economic distress is taking center stage values can be lost.  With unemployment rising, with taxes rising, with fear rising, with hopelessness rising, you need someone you can turn too and lean on.

In a world of relativity and tolerance you need to establish at least one absolute principle.  With the erosion of morality, and escalation of abominations you need someone you can trust in.  Jesus is that someone.

Jesus said that without him you could do nothing, but with him you could do all things.  Jesus declared that he was the only way, truth and life and if any man comes unto him in no way would he be cast out.  Jesus said you would not be popular if you loved him, but you would be powerful.  The choice is before you.

Many people are ashamed to say Jesus is their Saviour, to speak of him among their co-workers, or to lift him up when others are tearing him down.  Jesus said if you deny me, I will deny you, but if you lift me up I will lift you up. Let’s lift him up everyday and let the world know He is the only way.

So back to my question, Is Jesus First in your Life.?  I develop a short test to help you determine the range of your relationship with him.

How often do you talk to him?

How often do you read the letters he has left for you?

How often do you attend the place where He meets His people?

How often do you do something for him?

How often do you tell him you love him?

We all have people we love and we like being with them.  Often life places distance between Families members.  You know how it feels when you can’t see them or be around them like you want to.  You have to take advantage of those moments and build as many memories as possible.

But, with Jesus things are different.  He is close at all times.  He is never on vacation, never too tired, never too busy.  He is always ready to receive you, to spend time with you, or meet with you. With it being so easy to reach him, we should take advantage of it more.

Putting Jesus first is making sure that you make time for him.  It means that nothing in your life displaces him.  It means that you never lose sight of him.  When you put Jesus first you find yourself doing better, getting ahead, and being filled with greater peace and less despair.

When you put Jesus first you find him pushing you forward, helping you up, and giving you the courage to keep going.  Jesus will not settle for second place in our life.  So we must fight to keep him first.

When Jesus is first, your are first.  When Jesus is first your life is full of peace.  When Jesus is first, you are able to endure hardships, and difficulties more easily.

So if he is not first, push him to the front of the line.  If he his first keep him there and enjoy the privileges it brings.  With so many things trying to defeat us, destroy us or discourage us, it is comforting to know Jesus is number 1.

Ask God

There is incredible power in asking God for help.  The Bible constantly declares that God is waiting to help, desirous to help and ready to help.

Mark 11:24

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.  KJV

‘Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.   NIV

That’s why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you’ll get God’s everything.  Message

For this reason I say to you, All things whatsoever ye pray for and ask, believe that ye receive it, and it shall come to pass for you.  Darby

Because of this I say to you, all whatever — praying — ye do ask, believe that ye receive, and it shall be to you.  Young

Look at the incredible claims these passage makes.  We know God does not lie and this is His Holy Word.  What would happen if you asked God with this kind of confidence and assurance?

How would your life change if you quit vacillating, and making excuses for unanswered prayers?

Whatsoever you desire, whatever you need, whatever you ask for, all of these things can be added to your life.  You have not because you ask not.

Asking is not throwing words toward heaven.  It is not declaring things without confidence and committment. Asking is putting into words what you really need.  It is being specific, precise, and direct.

Example.  If you need a job. You don’t just say God I need a job.  You know what skills you have, you know what kind of work your able to perform so you ask according to those lines.  If you have been a car mechanic all of your life you don’t ask God to give you a job at the hospital as a doctor.  It would be foolish and unanswered.

So many people frustrate their prayers by asking for things they don’t need, or praying in a way that makes no sense.  If you go into the grocery store you don’t ask the clerk to go get you some groceries, you ask specific questions such as, where is the bread located, which way to the fruit section etc.

When you ask specifically you get directions.  When you ask generally you generally get no answers.  Look at these verses closely and then obey them.

God word works when we obey it.  When we follow His directives.  The next time you need help, ask according to the above verse and enjoy God’s great help.

What Your Thoughts Bought

Your thoughts have incredible power for good or bad. Eventually you will become what you think, so think wisely. Since we ultimately become what we think, our thinking should be considered carefully.

Once you understand that your thoughts can bring death or life, hope or despair, peace or confusion you will begin to harness them. It is true that you are where your thoughts have taken you.

Thoughts become the vehicle in which you ride down the road of life. As a man thinks so he becomes the wise man said. You can evaluate where you are today by simply looking back over your thought life. What you thought is now the way you think.

Your thoughts are seeds you plant in the soil of your life and they produce according to their kind. If you plant negative seeds you receive negative fruits. If you plant hate and unforgiveness you receive the like kind. If you sow peace you receive peace.

With this great power in your mind no wonder God said bring every thought into subjection. Get control over your thoughts. Be careful what you say, be careful what you think.

The writer of James said the tongue was the most unruly and deadly instrument in our body. Why? Because the tongue speaks for our mind. The words our tongue forms and our vocal organ speaks comes from the most powerful area of our life, our mind.

Your thoughts and thinking will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. What you expect you will receive. What you declare will show up. How often have you spoken words only to see them come to pass.

How many marriages dissolved after harsh words about divorce were used? How many people lose their health after they begin to fear sickness or are constantly declaring they feel sick.

Only fools speaks negative. Solomon said a fool is known by the inability to keep from speaking all that is in his mind. Just because you think it doesn’t mean you have to speak it. James said be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.

If you want to change your life, change your thinking. If you want to be more successful, begin to think successfully. The way you see yourself is the way you will become. So see yourself in positive lights and doing good things. Whatever you want out of life, see it in your mind and then declare it with your life and living.

The Bible says a merry heart, or a positive person is better than medicine. Your thoughts can produce health and hope better than any pharmacy. The Bible also said a broken or negative spirit weakens the bones, and makes your face pale. So you determine your attitude and altitude. So quit complaining about your life and change your thoughts. This will change your life.

You cannot think a certain way and it not eventually become a reality. So what you want, think on that? What do you want to see changed in your life, think on that? Look around you and the people you admire are people who have learned to control their thought life and now are living a life that is greatly thought of.

As long as you blame your life, your marriage, and your problems on someone else you are living in quicksand. The moment you take full responsibility for where your life is, is the moment your life will begin to change for the better.

You need to repent, make an about-face, turn in a new direction. Why live in despair, and discouragement any longer? Change your thinking and before long you will see your new thoughts alive in every area of your life.

If I want peppers I would plant pepper seeds and if I want a better life I need to plant the seeds that will produce that life. Your answer is not outside of you but inside of you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made by God and he doesn’t make junk so quit living like he does.

You can do all things, so erase your negative thoughts and begin to plant better thoughts in your mind today. As the old slogan “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” declares you must refuse to waste yours. Give your mind a chance to make you into another man.

You will be shocked by the changes you will find when you change your thoughts. Don’t wait, start today.

15 Weeks To Make This Year Count

2010 is almost 3/4 gone. Have you kept your goals you set earlier in the year? Have you made the progress you hoped for? Are you pleased with where you are? Or have you fallen short, given up or said maybe next year?

Let me encourage you to not give up just yet. There is still enough time to redeem this year. You can still make a huge difference in your life. If you will take advantage of the next 15 weeks of the year you leave 2010 with joy and success.

If you have made great progress and find yourself where you wanted to be. Congratulations. Keep up the good work, continue to pay the price and receive the fruits of your labor. Achievement is the life blood of goal setting.

Regardless which of these two camps you find yourself in, you can still make improvements. We are not promised tomorrow but what we do today impacts our tomorrow’s in a great way.

It’s not too late to reset your goals or set new goals. It’s not too late to start fresh and new in an area where you failed. It’s not too late to start, so start today.

Remember you are in control of your thoughts and what you think you will become. So think the right thoughts, the best thoughts, the thoughts that will push you forward and up.

Mark said in scripture, Whatsoever things you desire, when you pray, believe that you shall have them, and you will receive them.

Don’t forget to keep the Lord front and center in your life. He will help you reach your potential and take the right steps.

Set down today and see where you are and do whatever it takes for you to plan the next 15 weeks correctly. You will be glad you did.
